I’m not afraid of Friday the 13th
I’m not afraid of Friday the 13th, just being optimistically cautious. Of all the superstitions the number 13 is the most common. You know the other superstitions, like don’t let a black cat cross your path or don’t walk under an open ladder. Well as least the last one makes sense. If someone is up on the ladder and drops something while you are walking under the ladder chances are pretty good you’ll get hit.
But fearing the number 13 just seems ridiculous. Did you know that many high rise buildings avoid numbering the 13th floor? Next time you’re in Las Vegas try to find a 13th floor in a hotel. Not going to happen. Even airplanes don’t have a 13th aisle!
As superstitions go, there is an upside to this one. It says that people born on Friday the 13th are considered lucky. This reminds me of my neighbor’s son who was born on Friday the 13th. He was a normal rough and tough little boy. One day he was out running around the house and ran into the street and got hit by a car. We all thought he was a goner. But he picked himself up and ran home. Now that’s what I call lucky! So maybe there is something to this after all?
I find that superstitions are based on beliefs or practices that result from either ignorance or fear of the unknown. In this day an age with technology, especially the Internet, many myths, legends and superstitions can be explained or given a reason for what has happened.
So I’m not afraid of Friday the 13th! At least I know that the day is almost over and nothing so far has happened to me – knock on wood!
Until later,
Linda
